It is a story that immediately appeals to the imagination: an old Mack tow truck that was used after the liberation to get the Amsterdam trams back on track. This impressive vehicle, with its heavy 160 HP engine and robust appearance, was a familiar sight in the city for years. Now we have the chance to bring this special vehicle back home – to the place where it once played an important role in the reconstruction.

The Mack has been on a journey: via other museums it ended up in Groningen, where it is still fully operational and waiting. Waiting for a new destination. And that destination could be our museum, with your help.

Why this Mack?

If you look closely, you will see a piece of living history in this tow truck. It tells the story of a city that had to rebuild its transport network after the war. Of mechanics and drivers who saw it as a loyal helper in re-railing derailed trams. Even today, original details, such as the typical GVB jacks on the running board, are still intact.

The idea that this unique vehicle would otherwise be lost – perhaps to a foreign collector – touches us. This is not just any truck. It is a symbol of craftsmanship, perseverance and the history of Amsterdam public transport.

Why Crowdfunding?

Our museum is run entirely by volunteers. Every tram, every restoration and every memory is supported by the efforts of people who want to keep this history alive. But we cannot do everything alone. Bringing back the Mack is a major challenge, both in terms of organisation and financing. That is why we want to make this project possible together with you, as a lover of heritage and history.
